Put your hand on your chest, feel that? That’s your heartbeat, and your life depends on it. For a business, sales are its heartbeat, and no business can survive without a steady flow of sales. And as a business owner, your #1 priority must be keeping that heartbeat going.
Let me be a bit more specific, great sales copy controls the reader. The writer uses the copy to lead the reader down a particular path. But, don’t make the mistake of thinking it’s done by force, actually, it’s the complete opposite. Great sales copy is welcomed by the reader. There’s no resistance, the reader and the copy come together naturally because they belong together.

Now you’re probably a bit skeptical about these claims, so I am going to show you how mind-blowing powerful sales copy can be. Here’s a true story about the first time I mailed a letter for a client, and I want you to think about how you would handle this situation. The letter goes into the mail, and we are both hoping for a good result. But the response wasn’t good, it was incredible. In fact, the response was too good! My client’s business was flooded with buyers, more than they could possibly handle.

I’m guessing the answer is no. So, let me tell you how some quick thinking by my client saved the day. Faced with the very real possibility of dozens of potential customers walking out the door because the sales staff can’t help them, my client decided to find a way to convince them to stick around… so he bought everyone pizza! Now, instead of killing time, the shoppers who had to wait were having lunch! The sales team had time to help every person, a disaster was averted, and everyone ended up happy.

You’re sure to agree with this next statement, it’s not easy, even when you do everything right. That $27 million dollar sales letter I mentioned, here’s what happened. That was the first letter I mailed for a long-time client who had just started a new job. I’d written dozens of great letters for him, and we were both pumped about this new opportunity. Then I get a call from him and he’s in a complete panic. He asks, “can we stop the mailer?”
The Worst Day I’d Ever Had in Business
My stomach turned as I told him the letter had gone to the post office two days ago, there was nothing I could do. Furiously my client said, “Great, they hate your letter, I think I’m going to lose my job!” and he slammed down the phone.
You see, the poor guy’s a month into a new job, and he wanted to WOW the new bosses with a huge sale, that’s why he hired me to write a sales letter. But he made one big mistake, he never got the letter approved by his bosses… and they were irate. They thought the mailing was a huge waste of money, and they said my letter would NEVER ‘work.’
I remember that phone call like it was yesterday. It was a Thursday afternoon, and I was useless for the rest of the day. Although my client was on my mind almost every waking moment, I didn’t call him the next day, or over the weekend. And when I didn’t hear anything from him on Monday, I couldn’t wait any longer, I had to know how he was doing, so I called him.
The man on the Other End of the Phone was a Completely Different Person
He gleefully answered my call saying, “Hey Trip, how’s it going?”
He wasn’t just happy, he was ecstatic! That’s because his bosses were singing a different tune. The letter that ‘wouldn’t work,” had just shattered every sales record in their company’s 45-year history. In fact, the bosses couldn’t wait to meet me! By the time the dust had settled, they had hit $27 million dollars in sales on a 10,000 piece mailer. As you can probably guess, I still work with that company to this day!
Now let’s agree on one thing,
